The good news is that the extra money you pay goes to a good cause you'd support with the license plate purchase.
In Wisconsin, there are 2 Endangered Resources license plates. The DNR says the plates have played a critical role in funding conservation work for more than 400 wildlife species and 300 plant species listed as endangered, threatened, or special concern.
Wisconsin Endangered Resources License Plates
Wisconsin residents wanting an Endangered Resources license plate currently have two design options, a wolf or an eagle. Those who choose either plate will pay a $15 issuance fee (a one-time fee), plus an annual $25 donation, and the regular state registration fee. If you want them personalized, you'll also pay an additional $15 each year.
The Wisconsin DNR notes that since 1994, sales of Endangered Resources license plates have played a critical role in funding conservation work. The DNR works across the department and with partners and volunteers to locate, protect, and manage native plants, animals, and Wisconsin’s natural communities from the common to the critically endangered.
For example, Wisconsin is home to the nation's most extensive system of State Natural Areas the funds are used towards the creation and upkeep of preserving native ecosystems and special geologic features. These sites provide habitat for many of the state’s endangered plant and animal species.
30 Years Of Endangered Resources License Plates Celebrated With A Rebate
The Wisconsin DNR announced recently that it is celebrating 30 years of Endangered Resources license plates by offering a $25 rebate for people who buy new Endangered Resources license plates or for current plate holders who switch from one plate design to another. This offer is good through December 31, 2024.
Drew Feldkirchner, DNR Natural Heritage Conservation Director, says the rebate will help more people support rare species and unique places in Wisconsin while showing that support on their vehicles.

Drivers who have already renewed their 2024 registration can still switch to an Endangered Resources license plate and take advantage of the rebate. There is no need to re-submit the registration payment, and your registration renewal month will stay the same. The total cost for the new plate this year would be only $15.
People can buy a license plate at any time, and there is no need to wait for registration renewal.
To buy a new plate, visit the Endangered Resources license plate webpage to download and complete the DNR Rebate Form and the WisDOT Endangered Resources License Plate Application Form. Please allow up to six weeks for processing the rebate checks.
