Later this year, the Duluth International Airport will be renamed in honor of the late Jim Oberstar - the congressman from Chisholm who championed Northland causes during his 36 years in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Saint Louis County Commissioners have pledged $30,000 to help the project - a dollar amount that will be added to the $30,000 the City of Duluth has already pledged.  The Monaco Air Foundation is in charge of collecting public and private donations to fund the renaming of the terminal.

As the longtime chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he was able to secure millions of dollars for road, bridge, bike path and transit projects for Minnesota and his home district - including crucial funding for the $78 million Duluth terminal project during his final years in Congress.

The county board says that the renaming of the airport will be a fitting tribute to the late congressman.
