Zack Snyder Never Saw the Theatrical Cut of ‘Justice League’

There’s a new report in the Wall Street Journal about the #1 question on the minds of DC fanboys everywhere: Is there really a director’s cut of Justice League by Zack Snyder, comprised just of the footage he shot for the movie before he quit and was replaced by Joss Whedon?

The Journal found no new evidence that this thing exists, except perhaps as “a rough cut” from “after he finished principal photography in late 2016.” And while Snyder’s spokeswoman refused to discuss the existence of a director’s cut, she did tell the paper an interesting tidbit: Snyder “never watched the version of Justice League released in theaters.”

The report does note that “Snyder oversaw the new scenes Mr. Whedon wrote the following winter and had planned to shoot them himself before the death of his daughter prompted him to leave.” So if you want to blame Whedon completely for the finished film and its tone, as many hardcore Snyderites do, that’s not quite right.

As for fans’ hopes to hear an announcement about a Snyder cut at San Diego Comic-Con this week: Yeah no. WSJ says Warners “isn’t planning to mention a Snyder cut or to release any alternate versions of Justice League.” But I imagine the acknowledgement in this article of a “rough cut” will be enough to fuel more petitions and social media campaigning for at least another couple months. And I wonder: Is this the first instance of a credited director (Snyder is the only one who directed the film according to its credits) hadn’t even seen the movie he’s credited with directing?
