Bad news for those who have been taking the detour around the work on Wisconsin Highway 35 south of Superior:  Better get used to that altered route until after Labor Day.

Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are informing the public that the discovery of contaminated soil on the project site will alter the completion date until after Labor Day.

The original date for the completion of the project was the end of August.

As crews worked to replace a culvert, they discovered contaminated soil;  Initial tests show an amount of petroleum.  Environmental scientists contracted by WISDOT determined that the soil needs to be removed from the site.

The new target date for completion is now October 2.

The detour using County B East, to County A North, to County C West will remain in place until the completion of the project.
