Mentoring has changed over the years. Callie and Alice came in to talk about what you need to know. Qualifications, like spending time with kids, willing to share memorable experiences, 2 hours a week.

There are over 250 kids waiting for a mentor and you could be that person. There are incentives for planning, like free passes to places in Duluth. There are plenty of things to do especially now that there is warmer weather.

The Mentor Duluth Collaborative matches postitive adults with young people between the ages of 5-18, and according to their website they have been doing this for 75 years. According to Callie, mentors are asked to be a role model, guide, resources and – most importantly – a friend to their mentees. the matches are based on shared interests between the youth and adult.

The program works because it's a collaboration of seven youth serving agencies including the Duluth Area Family YMCA, the Boys & Girls Club of the Northland, Valley Youth Centers, YWCA Duluth, Neighborhood Youth Services, Proctor Hermantown Community Education and Mentor Superior. There are strict guidelines when you become a mentor and boundaries are set up to make it enjoyable for both people.

Bottom line, show the kids a good time and be a positive role model.
