On this day in 2010,  Leonard Skinner, the Florida gym teacher who was the inspiration for the band Lynyrd Skynyrd died. Before they were Lynyrd Skynyrd, they were known as My Backyard. With the addition of a couple new members, they felt it a good time for a name change. They selected their new handle jokingly as  a mocking tribute to their gym teacher Leonard Skinner, who was notorious for punishing students with long hair. Truth be known, Leonard was very  cool about it, and knew it was all in good fun.
