The Lake Superior Ice Project has collapsed.  The massive ice sculpture that has overlooked the shores of the bay off Barkers Island since December has fallen - an apparent victim of weather and wind and its own height.  Some reports are also suggesting that one of the wires that were holding up the structure during construction may have bent.

Roger Hanson - the mastermind behind the project - was zeroing in on setting a record for the tallest ice sculpture.  Updates on his Facebook page just a day a ago suggested that he was near the 65-foot mark.  Officials with the City of Superior has planned a celebration for the completion of the project on February 28 - with a fireworks display.

This is a breaking story and as more details are available, we will share them here.
