While weather for travelers in Northern Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin will be nice on Thanksgiving morning, wintry conditions will be making their way into the Twin Ports region  by Thursday night and Friday – making travel a little more difficult for holiday drivers and shoppers.

With temperatures near 50 degrees through the first part of the week and for Thanksgiving Day, a drastic change is on the way as a storm system moves in from the west. The core of this storm has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch for Northwestern Minnesota, effective Thursday afternoon through Thursday night. The NWS is predicting 3-7 inches of snow for the warned area that will be compounded by strong wind gusting up to 45 miles per hour.

Impact on the Twin Ports Region

The storm system will bring some light drizzle later in the day on Thursday, and temperatures will drop in the evening and overnight hours. Drizzle will turn to snow, and wet roadways may get slick as colder air moves in. Snow will continue through the night and into the morning hours of Black Friday. According to a NWS Hazardous Weather Statement, 2-4 inches of snow could be expected in the Twin Ports region, with greater amounts of snow expected near the Canadian border.

As the storm system continues to move through the area, a north wind is expected to bring some lake effect snow to the Twin Ports region, Especially from Duluth and Superior eastward toward Ashland and the Bayfield Peninsula. Breezy conditions and temperatures in the 20s will lead to chilly conditions for Friday.
