Four major utility upgrade projects have been in the works throughout the City of Duluth recently and it looks like they're on track to being finished within their anticipated completion dates.

If you drive through the work areas or live near them, you might be wondering about updates.  The city has provided the following information for the general public:

Michigan Street Utilities:

On Michigan, workers have finished the utility installs along the initial first-phase of the construction project.  The street surface between 3rd Avenue West and Michigan is being reconstructed at the current time.  Some additional work will be needed, though before its open again to traffic.  Contractors anticipate the work will be wrapped up on time - with the 3rd phase to begin in mid-July - impacting the area from the Medical Arts Building to 4th Avenue West.

East 4th Street:

There is a lot of work being done on this part of the hillside.  Gas main upgrades are currently being worked on, with the project currently in progress at the middle of the intersection of 4th and 6th Avenue East.

The intersection of 4th and 4th east is open again to traffic.  The street has been completed, but some additional gas connections are needed at 6th Avenue East,.

Motorists that drive south on 6th Avenue East are strongly encouraged to take 9th Street as an alternate route.  If you're headed west towards downtown or Essentia-St. Mary's, you can utilize 3rd Street.

Meanwhile, water connections on East 4th are nearing completion.  The project between 14th and 16th East is expected to be finished sometime next week.

Overall, work on East 4th has been somewhat delayed by weather conditions, equipment failures, and the need for concrete to cure fully.

Arrowhead and Kenwood:

Workers have been upgrading the water main in this area.  Kenwood is open to traffic in both directions - while Arrowhead is limited to west bound traffic only in the posted project area.  Access to Kenwood Shopping Center is currently at Cleveland Street.  This project is expected to wrap up by mid-June.
