It really shouldn't come as a  surprise:  You can't believe everything you read on food packaging.    After all  the food products you consume are packaged and marketed just like any other product, and the companies that produce these groceries are only in business for one reason:  to make money.

However, the buyer must still beware.

A recent article outlines ten things that food producers don't want you to know.  The list includes practices that anyone in business should be familiar with.  From confusing labels to exagerated claims, the food products that we shop for on the grocery shelf are set up to maximize sales numbers.

The list - reported by US News and World Report includes:

1. Junk food makers spend billions advertising unhealthy foods to kids

2. The studies that food producers support tend to minimize health concerns associated with their products.

3. More processing means more profits, but typically makes food less healthy

4. Less-processed foods are generally more filling than their highly processed counterparts.

5. Many supposedly healthy replacement foods are hardly healthier than the foods they replace.

6. A health claim on the label doesn't necessarily make a food healthy.

7. Food industry pressure has made nutritional guidelines confusing for consumers.

8. The food industry funds front groups that fight antiobesity public health initiatives.

9. The food industry works aggressively to discredit its critics.

10. "Pink slime" is on its way out—but it's not gone.
