Tom’s Notes: Hermantown and Duluth Marshall Hockey Teams Get Sendoff to State Tournament + More

Two area high schools send-off for their boys hockey team to state Tuesday. The season lives on.

Duluth Marshall send-off at 9:40am at school.  Complete with the Topper Tunnel. Hilltoppers 16-12 overall.

Hermantown Hawks will get their state send-off at 11am at the high school gym.  The Hawks are 23-4-1

Both teams meet this Wednesday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  They are the second game of the day in Class A.

In the Class A tournament the Hermantown Hawks earned the #3 seed and drew the unseeded Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers in the quarterfinals.

The teams play at 1pm on Wednesday at the X in St. Paul.

The Hawks won the only regular season meeting between the Lake Superior Conference teams 4-3.

In the Class AA Tournament Duluth East is the #2 seed and drew Moorhead in the quarterfinals.  The Hounds topped the Spuds 5-1 back in January.

Those two teams play at 11am on Thursday at state.  The Greyhound sendoff is Wednesday at 9:30am.

 

Don’t forget Drummond

Drummond is also at state in Wisconsin high school boys basketball tournament in Madison.  They will face Green Bay Lutheran at 1:30pm on Thursday at the Kohl Center. Drummond is 24-2 overall and Green Bay Lutheran is 27-0.  The teams met in the regular season, with Drummond losing a 4th quarter lead.

Head Coach Josh Hanson said about that game, “I think we were one of the closest teams to a loss.  We were up going into the 4th quarter and it was just a good game.  I think if we can get it to our temp we have a good chance of winning.”

The winner plays in the title game Saturday at 11am in Madison.  This is the 98th year of the Boys state basketball tournament in Wisconsin.

The Drummond Lumberjacks were at state a year ago, but lost in the semifinals.  They are the Western Division champs of the Indianhead Conference this year and they beat Clayton 39-34 to earn the trip to state.

 

Bulldog Hockey

The UMD Men’s hockey team swept Alabama–Huntsville over the weekend at Amsoil Arena, 4–2 and 4–0.

It was their 3rd sweep of the season.

The Bulldogs were pleased to start a winning streak, heading towards the playoffs.  Head Coach Scott Sandlin said, “Overall we did what we wanted to accomplish and that was to win two games. A lot of good things again, we got guys scoring that haven’t scored in a while.”

Senior defenseman, Wade Bergman agreed, “A confidence booster, it’s been awhile since we had that feeling so, we are cherishing it for now and will get ready for Nebraska-Omaha.”

Another senior defenseman, Drew Olson said, “It’s been awhile since we had a win, let alone a sweep and no matter who it is it gives us a good feeling and puts us at ease.”

 

Dome Baseball:

The St. Scholastica Saints baseball team played two at the Metrodome on Monday, splitting with St. Thomas.  The Saints won game 1 (3-2) but lost game 2 (6-3).

UMD played Bemidji State in two games as well at the Dome on Monday, and UMD lost in game 1 (2-1) in 9 innings.

UW-Superior plays there Wednesday against Augsburg College.

 

NBA Monday:

The Miami Heat would get the franchise best 15th straight win with a 97-81 victory over Minnesota on Monday.

Dwayne Wade with 32 pints and 10 assists in the game.   Minnesota’s Derrick Williams with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Rickey Rubio had 14 points for Minnesota in their 6th straight loss.

The Milwaukee Bucks won 109-108 Monday as they beat the Utah Jazz in overtime.  Monta Ellis had 34 points for Milwaukee..
