In case you were wondering what side of the political aisle Tom Petty sits on -- now you know;  The 61 year old rocker who had a string of hits in the 1970's and 80's has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Republican Presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann.  Even before announcing her candidacy, Bachmann has been using Petty's 1976 song "American Girl" as part of her stump-stops.   Seems that Tom has a problem with it.

Nonetheless, Bachmann has been thumbing her nose at the letter.

In spite of this, however, Bachmann again blasted the track Tuesday night in South Carolina, paring it down to just the key 29 seconds that include the lyrics, "Yeah, she was an American girl -- raised on promises."

While it's true that Petty owns the copyright to his music, it's unclear what legal recourse he has in the issue.
