The VFW Works To Support Veterans One Buddy Poppy At A Time

The first poppies were distributed before Memorial Day in 1922. February 1924 the name buddy Poppy was patented. Don’t just buy one and throw it on your dashboard. ware it proudly and correctly.

I’m willing to go out on a limb and say most millennial do not know what the Buddy Poppy is or what it represents. So I asked the two Millennials at the station here if they knew what a Buddy Poppy was. At first they did not know what I was referring to, but after some more information they went “oh yeah”.

Today, VFW Buddy Poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. But what I did not know is that there is a way to properly wear the Buddy Poppy.

Women should wear their poppy on their right side. The red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives, the black represents the mourning of those who didn't have their loved ones return home, and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much. The leaf should be positioned at 11 o'clock to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War One formally ended.
