Iron Range

Northern Minnesota drivers know Highway 37 as the short-cut from Highway 53 west - towards Hibbing.  Work to rebuild a railroad crossing will close that route for about a week, beginning Monday, September 19.

Drivers who travel on Highway 53 near Highway 37 and Eveleth will want to know about a major resurfacing project that will restrict traffic for the next month and half.

A summer remodeling project at the Hibbing High School offered an unexpected look back to the world in 1973 - when workers uncovered letters hidden behind a blackboard.

Our country is full of history - and so is the Northland!  Just like the natural beauty that we get used to seeing everyday, it's easy to overlook the historical importance of our region.

Drivers who use Highway 53 near the relocation project will want to heed the advice of the Minnesota Department of Transportation and use caution as work ramps up in the next few weeks.

Mining expansion is the cause of two highways being moved on the Iron Range.  While the Highway 53 relocation project is getting most of the press due to it's expense and the large bridge involved, a second project is underway near Chisholm.

Lake Vermilion looms large both on the map of Northern Minnesota and in the hearts and minds of many northland anglers;  the large lake is a favorite destination of fishermen trying their luck at catching a keeper.  In order to keep the waterway clear of Aquatic Invasive Species, the North St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District has taken an aggressive, proactive tract.

Multiple work zones will affect drivers in the Eveleth-Virginia area on Highway 53 for the next month or so as crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation make improvements to the roadway.

Officials with the 6th Judicial District are offering persons who may have outstanding warrants the opportunity to work through them at a special event that is happening Friday, May 13.  Deemed "Warrant Workout Day", the event allows a clearinghouse situation to people who have lesser charges against them.

Divers who utilize Highway 53 between the Twin Ports and the Iron Range will encounter a resurfacing project near Cotton.

Even as the economy is sluggish on the Iron Range, Taconite mines are on the move!  On the East Range, efforts by Eveleth Tac to continue their mining operations have forced the move of Highway 53 and the Mineview In The Sky overlook at the south-east side of Virginia.  Now it appears that a second Range mine-view site will be moved as well.

An important road project near Ely that is planned for this fall will have a Project Status Meeting on Tuesday, April 26.  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation will communicate the latest.
