Ten-Year Lithium-Battery Smoke Detectors To Be Distributed For Free In January

A program to distribute free smoke detectors will start on January 2, 2013 - according to the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.  A generous donation by Arcelor-Mittal will provide 100 Kidde smoke detectors that are equipped with 10-year sealed lithium batteries, available on a first come-first served basis.

Northland Chapter Of The American Red Cross To Hold Babysitter Boot Camps For Northland Kids

Thanks to a generous gift from the Arcelor-Mittal-Minorca mining company, Iron Range youngsters will get a big break on Red Cross Babysitter Training.  A $7,500 grant will underwrite the entire registration fee for what is being called Babysitter Boot Camp.

Duluth Resident Pays Tribute to Victims of Sandy Hook School Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut with a Guardian Angel Snow Sculpture in His Yard [PHOTO GALLERY]

Drivers who travel past the intersection of 4th Street and 21st Avenue East in Duluth during the winter months have grown accustomed to seeing snow sculptures in the yard of Harry Welty, who lives right on the corner of the two intersecting streets. Logging Truck Loses Cargo on London Road in Duluth [UPDATED]

This was the scene on London Road at 26th Avenue East this morning in Duluth. A logging truck turning off Interstate 35 onto London Road lost much of its load of logs around 9:00 am Tuesday (December 18), leading to some minor damage and a mess of logs hampering traffic.

Northland Chapter Of The American Red Cross Responds To Two Mobile Home Fires In Douglas County

Local Red Cross volunteers have provided assistance to two people after a fire in Douglas County destroyed two mobile homes on Schiff Road in Lakeside.  Two disaster responders from the agency responded to the fire and provided food, seasonal clothing and shoes, and emergency lodging in a local hotel.
