Along with the call to clear sidewalks, the recent snow the last few weeks has brought a renewed direction from local utility companies to clear ice and snow away from outdoor meters and regulators.  Specifically, Superior Water Light and Power is reminding their customers of the necessity to take care of these important utility inlets.

Snow and ice buildup can damage gas meters and pipes and make them difficult to reach in an emergency.  Blocked vents for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous buildup of Carbon Monoxide.

Here are some tips and reminders for the winter months:

  • Use a broom or brush to safely remove snow and ice from meters, pipes, and vents.  At the same time, it's important to not use ice-melting chemicals, salt, shovels, and sharp-edged tools to clear away the snow and ice.
  • Make sure that the meter is visible to snowplow drivers if it is near a street or sidewalk.
  • Repair leaks on eaves where water can drip into your meter and freeze.
  • Don't bury the meter when removing snow from your roof.
