The Superior Police Department is cautioning citizens to be careful in the wake of a potential local phone scam.

Numerous residents have recently reported receiving a phone call from someone identifying themselves as with the utility company.  The caller suggested that the individual had a past-due account and needed to take care of it right away of their power would be shut off.  In a scam like this, the criminal is seeking the bank account number of the victim.

The police department and officials with Superior Water Light and Power assure residents that this is a scam.  The utility company would not contact customers in such a manner.

If you receive a call like this, you're asked to call 911.
