Two animal groups, including one led by Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw‘s daughter Hannah, had a hand in rescuing a family of six black bears that were facing euthanization near Albany, N.Y. With help from Rock to the Rescue, all of them are headed a new home in a sanctuary near Denver.

According to the Albany Times Union, the younger Shaw was instrumental in securing the needed $52,000 grant from the ASCPA, and another $10,000 from Rock to the Rescue, to help transport the bears cross country and then build a new habitat. “They can’t go into the wild,” she told WNYT. “Because they’ve grown up in captivity. … We think it’s important to find an accredited facility where they will have life time care that is humane.”

The bears have been at the Ashville Game Farm and Exotic Zoo, outside Greenwich, N.Y., for the past seven years — but the facility recently received a legal order for removal because of an accreditation issue. The bears will spend a month at Lions, Tigers and Bears, a San Diego-based animal sanctuary, before heading to Colorado.

Rock to the Rescue, founded by Styx and REO Speedwagon, supports a variety of grass-roots local intiatives — including those that match wild animals in captivity with sanctuaries.
