There are plenty of ATV users in St. Louis County and the northland is home to hundreds of miles of trails.  In the future, riders might be able to use county roads;  a proposal to allow ATV use on some county roads is being circulated right now and lawmakers want to get your opinions.

Recent changes to state law give counties the authority to regulate the use of ATVs on county roads. Last fall, the County Board voted that an ATV usage policy is needed, recognizing that there are many ATV trails within the County that would require use of County Roads to travel from one trail to the next.

A series of meetings have been scheduled:

  • Thursday, February 11, 6:00 PM, Midway Township Town Hall, 3230 Midway Road
  • Monday, February 22, 6:00 PM, Vermilion Community College, (Room CL 104) 1900 East Camp Street, Ely
  • Thursday, February 25, 6:00 PM, St. Louis County Public Works Office in Virginia, (downstairs large training room) 7823 Highway 135

Once public input is gathered, engineers will draft an ordinance and present it to the County Board for consideration. The draft ordinance will then be put out for public review and comment. Final edits will then be made and presented to the County Board for possible adoption. The goal is to finalize the ATV ordinance by late April.
