Russian scientists on a fact-finding mission to give relevancy to global warming claims were recently rescued by helicopter from their ship which became ice-bound on Christmas Day.  Their rescue from the ship Akademic Shokalskiy finally came today, a little over a week from when they originally became stranded in the ice.

The irony of the story is that the expedition was supposed to find evidence of global warming.

Chris Turney, the expedition’s leader, is a professor of climate change at the University of South Wales. According to Turney’s personal website, the purpose of the expedition is to “discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.”

Three [previous] rescue attempts had been thwarted by growing levels of sea ice and weather conditions.
