There have been many different Robin Hoods. He’s been a swashbuckler, a cartoon, a prince of thieves, even Russell Crowe once. That was the last big-screen Robin Hood, in 2010. This newest Robin Hood, coming to theaters this fall, reinvents him as a kind of superhero; he has a secret identity he uses to strike back at his enemies while also doing all kinds of crazy arrow stunts and martial arts. Taron Egerton plays the title character; Jamie Foxx is the John to his Robin Hood. (Based on the posters, he’s just John, not “Little John.” Jamie Foxx is not little.)

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.

This is the same project that was known for a while as Robin Hood: Origins. (Isn’t almost every Robin Hood story except maybe Robin and Marian an origin story? Whatever.) For a while, there was a second Robin Hood project in development at the same time as this one; a Disney film called Nottingham and Hood, which was described as “a revisionist take on the beloved, classic character.” Very often, in the battle of competing films based on the same concept, whoever is first wins. And in this case, Egerton’s Robin Hood wins. It opens in theaters on November 21.
