Multiple work zones will affect drivers in the Eveleth-Virginia area on Highway 53 for the next month or so as crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation make improvements to the roadway.

MNDOT workers will be replacing culverts, improving drainage, and resurfacing the roadway.

The scope of the project will affect Highway 53 between Highway 37 and Vermilion Drive.

Drivers can anticipate single-lane traffic and short, intermittent closures;  Closures will not last longer than 15 minutes at a time.  Flaggers will direct traffic. In addition, MNDOT warns motorists that some areas that will be reduced to single-lane traffic will have narrower than usual roadways - only about 9 feet wide;  Drivers are cautioned to slow down.

The project is expected to wrap up by mid-June.
