Mining expansion is the cause of two highways being moved on the Iron Range.  While the Highway 53 relocation project is getting most of the press due to it's expense and the large bridge involved, a second project is underway near Chisholm.

Expansion of Hibbing Taconite is prompting the relocation of County State Aid Highway 5 near Chisholm.  The current route will be abandoned when done and the highway will then follow what is currently CSAH 136 into Chisholm, where it will meet up with Highway 73.  In order to accommodate the new intersection, a roundabout is being built just west of where the Iron Man Statue stands.

Funding for the project is originating from Hibbing Taconite in accordance with state statute.

Next year the work on the roundabout will occur.  Until it's finished, a temporary traffic signal will be placed at the intersection.

More details can be found on the St. Louis County webpage.
