The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of Northeastern Minnesota, effective from 9:00 pm Wednesday evening through noon Friday. A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

The winter storm warning issued by the NWS states that there is a potential to see 8-12 inches of snow across the region, with heavy snow at times making for difficult travel.

While this storm currently looks to bring just snow to most of Northern Minnesota, this same system will bring rain to southern portions of the area impacted by the storm, and an area of freezing drizzle and mixed precipitation will develop along the borderline between the warmer and colder air. Portions of the I-35 corridor and parts of northwestern Wisconsin could see a glaze of ice, and areas on the North Shore in higher elevations could see 9-15 inches of snow.

This line of transition may move as the track of this storm solidifies, but it appears as of right now that the line will extend just north of an area from Mankato to areas north of the Twin Cities, and into northern Wisconsin. Areas south of this line will see mostly rain, while areas north of this line will see mostly snow.

Snow is expected to start falling in the Twin Ports area Wednesday night, with the heaviest of the snow expected through the day Thursday, and will wrap up by sometime midday Friday. Temperatures will fall following this storm, with temps falling through the day on Friday to a low on Friday night near 0 degrees, and daytime highs on Saturday will struggle to reach 10 degrees. Temps will rebound slightly on Sunday, reaching into the teens.
