If you're involved with the logging or trucking industry, one of the dates that you use to mark winter and spring is with the increase (or decrease) of load limits.  Truck operators in the Northland will see the announcement from the Minnesota Department of Transportation regarding load increases as a sure sign that winter has arrived!

Effective on December 16, MNDOT is increasing the load limits for unrestricted highways up to 10-percent over the standard legal maximum load.  It should be noted that trucks must still comply with current registration weight laws and not exceed registered gross weight tolerances.

Much like this increase, the end date for winter loads is variable and drivers should check for updates throughout the year.  One easy way of doing that is by checking the resource page on  MNDOT's website.
