If you've noticed that one of Duluth's skyline features is dark, you're not seeing things;  The decorative lights on the Blatnik Bridge have been turned off - as workers perform maintenance on the bridge span.

During the two year project, the lights will remain off as workers work on extending the life of the bridge.  Navigational lights will remain on, however.

At one point, there was discussion to not replace the decorative lights that have graced the bridge structure the last ten years or so - due to budget concerns.  However, a new proposal to replace the lights with more energy-efficient lighting has passed and drivers should expect to see those operational by the fall of 2013.
