Kiss’s Famous Comic Book Blood Trick Copied by Flaming Lips

In a move that simultaneously reaffirms the marketing genius of Kiss while illustrating the bottomless depths of Wayne Coyne’s weirdness, the Flaming Lips frontman has revealed that the band plans to include the blood of its collaborators in its upcoming 2-LP Record Store Day exclusive release.

The album in question, titled ‘The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwiends‘ (no, that isn’t a typo), finds the band working with an eclectic array of special guests that includes Bon Iver, Ke$ha, Neon Indian, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu. And in order to make things a little more interesting — or perhaps to appeal to the elusive phlebotomist/vinyl enthusiast demographic — Coyne’s trying to have a few copies pressed with literal blood in the literal tracks.

“I don’t have everybody’s blood just yet, but I collected quite a few vials of blood and it’s actually sitting in my refrigerator as we speak,” Coyne said during a recent interview, presumably while eating spaghetti on a unicycle and having laser beams implanted in his teeth. “I’m going to try to take that same concept and put little bits of everybody’s blood in the middle of this record. Like a glass specimen thing.”

So far, Coyne’s blood drive has yielded donations from Neon Indian, Prefuse 73 and Ke$ha — none of whom were alive when the members of Kiss essentially invented the pop culture blood implant by contributing their own hemoglobin to the first ‘Super Special Kiss’ comic book in 1977. But in Coyne’s defense, not all of his ideas were taken from the Kiss playbook; in fact, the Flaming Lips remain the only band ever to put an EP on a flash drive and have it embedded in a life-size candy skull. So far, anyway.
