I'll admit:  I'm one of those.  Usually when I'm running the snowblower - cleaning off the front and back driveways, I more-often-than-not make a couple of passes along the sidewalk down the block.  I have also been known to clear my neighbors driveways and I almost always make a pass near the fire hydrant down on the corner.

The Duluth Fire Department reminds residents that hydrant safety starts with you.  Keeping the hydrant that's nearest to your property clear of snow is a good practice to get into - one that might save the things you value someday.

The department asks that you consider "adopting" a hydrant.  It's not a formal process - just a good practice.
