The timing of Johnny Winter's death -- while on tour and preparing for the release of a guest-packed new studio album -- has only added to the emotional impact for fans.

Though 70, Winter didn't appear to be slowing down a bit. He died Wednesday in a hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland, having just played a festival in Austria on Saturday. A new album entitled 'Step Back,' featuring Eric Clapton, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Aerosmith's Joe Perry, is due for release on Sept. 2.

His sudden passing -- a cause of death still hasn't been announced -- sent several of Winter's most famous fans to social media to express their grief, shock and lasting admiration:
