Is This Winter Abnormal? On Average, When Does the Last Snow Fall in Duluth?

This spring seems more like an extension of winter, with two major winter storms hitting in mid-April in the Twin Ports, and a third one on the way. How abnormal is it to see snow storms like this in the Duluth/ Superior area so late in the season?

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this late-season snow isn't completely out of the realm of "normal" as climate data would suggest. The last measurable snow falls, on average, on April 27 in Duluth. The latest measurable snow ever in Duluth fell June 2, 1945.

While measurable snow isn't abnormal, the amount is not quite as normal. The normal snowfall measured in Duluth in April is 4.7 inches according to climate data. This season, we have seen an official measurement of 24 inches, with the potential of at least 4-8 more inches of snow this week.

The good news is that warmer weather is on the way for the Twin Ports for next week! Those in the know say after this weekend, we very well could be done with snow for the season.
