A dangerous intersection in Cloquet has been made a little safer.  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation rolled out improvements for the I-35/Highway 33 intersection as the result of a recent workshop.

MNDOT hosted a District Safety Plan Workshop in April and the recommendations that came forward from that group were implemented in Cloquet.  Specifically, during the scope of the work, state officials installed a “Your Speed Is” sign on northbound Highway 33 adjacent to the intersection warning sign.  They also replaced the 50 mph advisory speed limit sign associated with the intersection warning sign with a 45 mph advisory speed limit sign. MNDOT also reduced the number of signs on northbound Highway 33 in advance of the intersection to decrease the visual clutter. In addition, workers installed “Stop” bars in the median to promote compliance with the in-place “Stop” sign. There is also now a striped a double yellow center line in the median to provide better vehicle positioning guidance.

Long term plans for this intersection include geometric changes in the future.

The improvements made were part of the Toward Zero Death traffic safety program that the State of Minnesota has implemented.
