When I was a kid, I was a crossing guard. So, I was proud when JJ, my oldest, became a crossing guard. He took the job seriously and did his best. I have to say something that I always hear and it bothers me, it ain't like it used to be.

That's not a bad thing. When I was a kid, the crossing guards in the morning were the crossing guards in the evening, so only a few kids could do it. Now, there are morning guards, back up guards and couple days a week guards. It becomes something that more kids can do.

Another thing that has changed is how the Duluth Police Department says thanks. When I was a kid we got a certificate and a cool knife. Now, they get some free outings, like the one that is going to be this Friday at adventure zone.

There will be over 200 kids taking part in the fun day that is well deserved. Duluth Police will be hosting the event but it wouldn't be possible without donations from people and businesses.  During the year they also take in a movie and a hockey game.

On behalf of crossing guards from a former crossing guard, thank you for your service, and thank you to the Duluth Police and the people and businesses that are making is possible.
