Now that there has been a confirmed case of the West Nile Virus in Spooner, Wisconsin in Washburn County, Northlanders are right to be concerned about the potential risks here in our area.  Being there isn't a vaccination, the health risks involved with West Nile can fatal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have some tips to limit the risks involved with West Nile.  While there isn't a way to completely shelter yourself from infected mosquitoes, taking the following steps can limit your risk potential:

  • Use insect repellent.  As the best way to avoid possible infection is to avoid mosquito bites, the repellent can help to stem the risks.
  • Wear clothing with long sleeves and wear pants instead of shorts.
  • Avoid leaving doors and windows open without screens.
  • Eliminate things that attract mosquitoes around your home or property.  Get rid of standing water.
