The drive-in debuted long before that heyday: June 6, 1933, in Pennsauken Township, N.J. By then, Richard Hollingshead Jr. had spent five years tinkering with the concept. He knew cars could be a cash cow from watching his father who, in 1905, presciently switched the family business from manufacturing harness soap to making auto products.
