Boycott Urged As Production on Gregg Allman Biopic Resumes

A new Facebook campaign is urging the film crew to boycott as production resumes on a Gregg Allman biopic where tragedy struck in February. Filming on the project, titled ‘Midnight Rider,’ has moved to Los Angeles after an on-set train crash killed camera operator Sarah Jones while on location in Georgia.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has also expressed concerns over the production restart. “We have demanded that they provide clearances from any and all governmental agencies and/or police agencies that are investigating this company and the individuals involved,” IATSE international vice president Michael F. Miller Jr. says.

Jones was killed, and six other crew members injured, during a pre-production shoot on a Wayne County, Georgia railway trestle on February 20. The production company, called Unclaimed Freight, was filming a dream sequence on the tracks when a train unexpectedly came through. Georgia authorities are still investigating the 27-year-old Jones’ death.

The Facebook group, “I Refuse to Work on Midnight Rider! For Sarah!” and launched on Tuesday, already has more than 3,000 members. “Midnight Rider is coming to LA to shoot,” group creator David Allen Grove says on the page. “Let’s continue to stand up for Sarah, REFUSE to work on this show. Let’s shut it down!”

A candlelight walk and memorial was held in Jones’ honor on March 7. ‘Midnight Rider’ stars William Hurt, who has said the accident happened in the blink of an eye: “We didn’t have sixty seconds” to react. “We had less than thirty.”
