A program to distribute free smoke detectors will start on January 2, 2013 - according to the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.  A generous donation by Arcelor-Mittal will provide 100 Kidde smoke detectors that are equipped with 10-year sealed lithium batteries, available on a first come-first served basis.

The detectors will be distributed at two different locations in the Northland:

  • The Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross, 2524 Maple Grove Road, Duluth
  • The United Way of Northeast Minnesota, 229 W Lake Street, Chisholm

The smoke detectors come at a good time - as the holidays and the time around the first of the year are when people are most-susceptible to having home fires.
