While the worst of the first major snow storm of March 2013 will miss the Twin Ports region, we will still see plenty of snow and wind that could make driving messy Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for a vast majority of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, with the warning going into effect for the Twin Ports tonight (Monday) at 6 pm and remains in effect until 6 pm Tuesday.

What to Expect

Light snow is expected to begin in the Twin Ports in the later hours of this afternoon, and increase in intensity as the evening progresses. The most intense snowfall is expected late tonight and early Tuesday morning, bringing 5-8 inches of snow to the area. Locally higher amounts are possible, especially near Lake Superior with lake enhanced snowfall possible with this storm. Gusty winds off the lake will drop wind chill values near 0 degrees and make travel very difficult through the course of this storm due.

A band of heavier snow (6-12+ inches) is expected in an area between Moose Lake and the Twin Cities, so travel between the Twin Ports and Twin Cities will be extremely difficult during the course of this storm.
