‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ the fourth movie in the popular franchise, ruled the box office with an iron hand last week. With a $31.2 million haul over the New Year’s holiday, Tom Cruise and company again reigned supreme.

Movie studios inundated us with releases last week, which meant some were bound to get lost in the shuffle — especially the two that bowed on Christmas Day. Let’s take another look at them to refresh our memories in case anyone is thinking about heading to one of the area Marcus Theatres for a New Year's weekend outing.

With at least six movies opening in wide release on various days over the past week, it would’ve been easy for any film to get lost in the shuffle. But since Tom Cruise flicks rarely fade into the background, it’s hardly a surprise that ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ brought in $26.5 million to handily beat all its competitors at the box office this weekend.

Moviegoers lined up to see Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,’ giving the sleuthing sequel a $40 million showing and the top spot at the box office this weekend.

Whether your thing is singing rodents or sleuthing Englishmen, you’ll find both at our local Marcus Theatres. In ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,’ the squeaky trio of Alvin, Simon and Theodore find themselves marooned on a tropical island after they go overboard from their cruise ship.

It took a movie with a zillion stars to do it, but ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ has finally been knocked off its perch at the top of the charts. Despite blistering reviews, ‘New Year’s Eve’ brought in $13.7 million in its debut, making it the most popular movie at the box office this weekend.

Only two new movies open at our local Marcus Theatres this weekend, but never fear — a whole slew of new flicks are slated for theaters the week of December 19th, including ‘The Adventures of Tintin,’ ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ and the highly-anticipated ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’ But if you need to get your popcorn freak on now, here’s what’s premiering this week.
