Officials at the scene of the Boston Marathon - where two explosions have gone off - are placing the death count at 12, with nearly 50 injured.

The first of the explosions occurred in  the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel - a complex that acts as race headquarters - near the finish line.

Meanwhile, police have found a third explosive device that did not go off.

Police are investigating reports of explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.  The hotel that serves as the headquarters for the event is in a state of lockdown, as officials sort out the details.

The explosions happened about three hours after the finish of the marathon.
