It’s been over two decades since the Beach Boys worked together, but fans anticipating their new album won’t have to wait much longer. At the end of a promotional video for their new single ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio,’ the band announces that ‘The Beach Boys 50′ will be available on June 5.

The album coincides with the group’s 50th anniversary tour, which begins tonight (April 24) in Tucson, Ariz. “It’s given us an opportunity to get together in total harmony and do a fantastic song,” Mike Love says referring either to their famously layered vocals or the quieting of tensions between band members (or both).

According to the Guardian, the new single will be released after new material is issued as part of a zinepak. “The radio was my whole education,” Brian Wilson says of the new song, which is sure to make longtime fans of the band very happy. Their harmonies do sound as tight as ever; Al Jardine compared returning to the studio for the first time since 1989 to riding a bike.

“(You just) pick it up and go,” he says.

“(The new album) reminds me of our ‘Sunflower’ album, which is probably one of our least-selling albums, (but) some of the songs there are stunning,” Bruce Johnston told Billboard. “It’s not a quilt or a pot-luck dinner; it’s not like, ‘OK, everybody show up with your songs.’ It’s not one of those kind of albums … It’s all brand new.”

“Just as good as 50 years ago,” Wilson adds in the promotional video that shows the group in studio making ‘That’s Why God …’ Fans can decide for themselves, beginning this week. The Beach Boys plan 50 shows across America,  Europe and Japan. The last scheduled show is on August 19 in Nagoya.
