In 1966, the city of Duluth set out to build an entertainment venue to house the UMD Bulldogs Hockey team, have a place to draw national talent, and put on exhibitions. They chose an area that was run down near the lake, having a vision that this would be a great area to draw people in to watch concerts. The Beach Boys were one of the first bands brought in to celebrate the opening. The complex was originally called the Duluth Arena Auditorium, was built at a cost of $6.5 million. The Beach Boys were the hot ticket and it was a great opening celebration. 50 years later the venue is bigger and better and includes Pioneer Hall, The Duluth Curling Club, Ballrooms, the DECC Arena, The Symphony Hall, and now Amsoil Arena.

To help celebrate the 50th year, why not bring back the guys that helped open the place, The Beach Boys. The DECC has also added music legends the Temptations to round out the event. The 50th anniversary event set for Aug. 6, the event will include an open house, employee reunion (with as many can show up) and the concert by the Beach Boys and Temptations will have tickets priced below usual rates to reflect the history of the DECC.

KOOL 101.7 will play DECC history with memories of some of the bands who have played at the DECC over the years. Listen to the 7 In A Row Morning Show and I will give you some facts and memories until we get someone that can name the Group, Artist, or Memory I am talking about.

Good Luck!!
