Axl Rose Weighs In On Danish Giraffe Controversy

Axl Rose is having some fun with the controversy surrounding a Copenhagen Zoo that killed a healthy giraffe over the weekend, then fed it to the facility’s lions.

“Just enjoying the lion’s share of some tasty baby Giraffica sliders! Mmmmm!,” Rose tweeted overnight. “What’ll them crazy Danes think of next!”

It seems Marius, known as a reticulated or Somali giraffe, was culled because “his genes were well represented among the capitive giraffe population in European zoos,” according to the New York Times.

Of course, in places outside of the Guns n’ Roses camp, anger erupted — in particular, among animal rights activists. The Times photograph shows children gathered around the felled giraffe, who reportedly died of a shotgun blast. Meanwhile, it turns out that Marius was killed despite a bid of more than $680,000 from an individual who wanted to take the giraffe in. Some 30,000 signatures were quickly collected online in a petition to stop the killing, to no avail.

Rose later expanded on his initial comment: “But, seriously, let me get this straight … the Danes killed a two-year-old baby giraffe, chopped him up and fed him to the lions — allegedly in front of kids — to avoid inbreeding, rather than find a place for it. Maybe this is a big problem over there, I don’t know, but I’m not getting how this deters siblings and various other Danish family members from f—ing each other.”
