Steve Tanko

I’m a proud life-long resident of the Northland: Born and raised on the Iron Range, I’ve lived in the Twin Ports all of my adult years. I enjoy the fact that we get to enjoy all four seasons and I love the natural beauty that our area provides. I’m worked for the company that owns KOOL 101.7 since 1993 and I enjoy the fact that no two days are ever the same. Although you hear me on the radio during the mid-day shift, my mail role is Production Manager for our stations – writing and producing the commercials you hear. I’m married with one son. In my spare time (what is that?) I enjoy cooking, collecting records (primarily classic country), studying history and politics and being involved in the community on a variety of boards and committees.

Can I Eat Corned Beef On St. Patrick’s Day When It Falls On A Friday During Lent?

The Lenten Season of 2017 provides an interesting element to the usual fast and abstinence regulations for Catholics:  March 17 - St. Patrick's Day - falls on a Friday;  Catholics are not to consume meat and meat products during certain days of Lent and Friday is one of those.  With a large number of Catholics who are either Irish or trace some part of their heritage to Ireland, this can pose a problem in years when the two events collide.

It looks like Northland DFL leaders don't want to see Sunday liquor sales in the State of Minnesota.  While the 159-year ban on selling off-sale alcohol in the state passed the House hurdle 85-45 with plenty of non-partisan support down south, Representatives from the Arrowhead Region block-voted "no".
