I first got introduced to Steven several years ago when he was on the Sopranos. During my interview with him we discussed many things, Little Steven's Underground Garage, Sopranos, fellow musicians we both knew, and to my delight Edie Falco. I could sense even then how emphatic Steven was on educating people about the benefits of learning all we can about rock & roll. I want to share with you one of my all time favorite songs. It's a little known song, done originally by Arthur Alexander back in 1962. Not only is it a beautiful song, the tempo is unusual for the time. Many experts agree that the majority of r&r songs are done in 4/5 time. It was pretty much the standard. Arthur Alexander's "Anna (go to him)" was however done in 9/2 time. As soon as you hear the song, you'll notice a bit of difference.

Although The Allman Brothers came first, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the ultimate Southern Rock band. Southern image with a hard rock swagger if you will. Lead singer and songwriter Ronnie VanZant had an unusually unique voice, coupled with the ability to bare himself naked with sentiment, while spinning tales of the South, and rocking out at the same time.

"Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd", their debut album released in 1973 wrote the book on Southern rock. There are very few records that sound this raw and uncompromising that are released by debut bands. The true genius of Lynyrd Skynyrd is their ability to blend hard rock, blues, country and even garage rock into a sound that is totally pleasing to the ear, yet very unique.

Richie Havens,the first act to hit the stage at Woodstock, died of a heart attack on Monday, April 22. He was 72. In an earlier post, I explained in depth of my respect for Richie, complete with video. From the beginning, when he played Village folk clubs in the mid-Sixties, Havens stood out  because of the rhythmic style in with he played the guitar. Havens, played piano; as a teenager,and eventually wound up in Greenwich Village.playing the folk clubs.
