No, this is not science fiction, and could very soon be used in the military. US military brass today showed off the latest version of their robot dog. Named LS3 but dubbed Alpha Dog, a four-legged, autonomous robot that can follow a soldier.
The machine, one of a series designed by Boston Dynamics, can stand upright, walk for 20 miles without a break and carry up to 400 pounds.

It could someday support American troops in combat zones. It can be programmed to reach its destination by GPS or can follow a human leader across rough terrain.
