The much-talked about reconstruction project on 4th Street is underway;  St. Louis County crews started on Monday on  the work which will wrap up sometime this fall.

As part of the first segment of work, crews closed a two-block area - from 8th to 10th east.  In addition, they've also commenced on gas line work between 12th and 14th Avenue east.

Residents and visitors to Central Hillside can expect to see the work expand over the next few weeks towards 8th avenue east - with more utility work as far east as 18th Avenue.

The county has partnered with the City of Duluth to reconstruct almost two miles of road on 4th Street - work  that hasn't been seen in more than 30 years.  Along the way they'll be replacing the water, gas and sewer lines underneath - many of which are more than 100 years old.

The $13.8 million project should be complete in late November.
