1,600 turtles escaped captivity after vandals broke down the fencing that contained them at a farm in Georgia.  A dispute over fishing rights is believed to be the cause.

The turtles were discovered missing on July 21st.

[F]arm owner, David Driver, believes that vandals may have torn down the fences around his turtle pond.

"We had refused some people a right to fish in another pond and I think that was what caused it," Driver [said].

The turtles are believed to have slowly made their way to neighboring wetlands and ponds.  Their escape saved them from being sold off to pet stores and from export to China to be used in restaurants.
